WHY WE LOVE PREPPY

Image
Not only do we feel different when we dress preppy, but in most cases we are even able to sense admiration coming from strangers’ eyes.  How is this possible? Well, preppy clothing is highly recognizable. Many of the garments involved are rooted in British and early American collegiate culture, and are thus quite uniform-like.  This means that the moment we step out of the house in a pair of riding boots and a blazer, people don’t simply think that we are making an attempt at the preppy look, but rather, that we might have a high social status, or even income.  This desire for gaining strangers’ respect by wearing set outfit formulas, that are highly recognizable and pseudo-elegant, is what also prompted the recent old money trend to spread on social media. The truth is, our Tommy Hilfiger button down and La Martina leather bag speak to strangers, telling them we’re the crème de la crème of our community: we’re part of a private club, or we’re enrolled in a prestigious college.

LOST DESIGNERS: KIRA PLASTININA

Image
Kira Plastinina is a Russian fashion designer who showcased her first collection in January 2008 at AltaRoma fashion week in Rome, Italy.  She was born on June 1, 1992 in Moscow, Russia, making her only fifteen years old at the age of her debut. Her shockingly young age was the reason behind many articles that were published between 2008 and 2010 on European and North American magazines.  I came to know about Kira in 2008, while reading  W.I.T.C.H , an Italian kids and teen magazine, which was published from 2001 to 2012. It was surprising to find a full on, breaking news type of fashion article being featured on a magazine that normally centered around fiction, fantasy, and lifestyle. Again, the article's main point of interest was Kira Plastinina's young age.  Two more factors caused an enormous buzz around her public figure: her financial background, and her team's incredible PR skills. Each and every article about her work mentioned Kira's father, as one of the mai

TOKYO CULTURE STORY. MEN MAKE WOMEN CRAZY THEORY

Image
I was recently in London, and I had the pleasure to visit Japan House. It's a cultural institution that's home to Japanese art exhibitions, a library, a café and a store. When I visited, the library at Japan House was hosting a fashion book exhibition. I spent some time there, browsing through the numerous publications. Most of them were books that have only been published in Japanese, and they're generally hard to find online. One of the books that really caught my attention was What's Next? Tokyo Culture Story by Beams Japan. I had already heard of Beams, they sell products inspired by Japanese culture, and they also publish books and magazines. I was surprised to find out that a book centered around Tokyo's fashion, film, music and culture- a topic that might interest a vast quantity of foreigners- was actually only published in Japanese. It just goes to show how much Japan still is, in a way, hard to penetrate, and therefore it still holds a lot of its charm an

FASHION IN FILM: THELMA & LOUISE

Image
Today we're going to talk about a cult movie from 1991, Thelma and Louise , which I've only watched recently. I found it on channel La7d.  I'm in a Facebook group where users post   about movies that are on television in that moment, and that's exactly how I got lucky and found this gem. The director, Ridley Scott, is pretty famous for a variety of different genres, which I guess is very on brand for him, considering he's an icon of postmodernism. As a PoMo -an old fashioned abbreviation for Postmodernism- lover myself, it was to my surprise I noticed this movie has nothing to do with this style of film making. This is probably one of the most famous road movies ever, and it's strongly remindful of Bonnie and Clyde's story. Just a week before this, I had watched Paris, Texas , by Wim Wenders, another movie that takes place in the desert of the Southern states, although it has a slower and quieter style of narration. What struck me the most about Thelma and
